A progressive, reputable criminal and immigration law firm seeks enthusiastic self-starter full time legal assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting two lawyers and keeping track of the ongoing status of their files at various government agencies.

 

The legal assistant tasks include

Immigration

-Preparing, indexing and filing documents for disclosure in accordance with all divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court rules;

-Drafting correspondences including faxes, emails, and letters to various government agencies;

-Completing immigration forms, cross-referencing for accuracy;
-Performing cursory country conditions research and compiling country conditions documents;

-Preparing and monitoring access to information requests to various government agencies.

 

Criminal

-Preparing, indexing and filing court documents following the rules related to each court;

-Requesting transcripts, records of proceedings and other records pertaining to criminal trials;

-Preparing access to information requests to the RCMP and local police departments.

 

Office Admin

-Maintaining a bring-forward system to ensure all deadlines are met;

-Taking messages and logging correspondences between relevant agencies and the office;

-Organizing clients’ electronic files, including adding incoming faxes and correspondence;

-Updating clients’ files on in-house software program

-Communicating with clients by email, phone and in person;

-Arranging interpreters for client meetings and translators for documents;

-Arranging couriers to deliver documents for filing on time.

-Backup receptionist, as required.

 

Job requirements

-Graduate from a legal assistant program or equivalent experience;

Demonstrated interest in working with various cultures and marginalized communities is an asset;

-Excellent English skills, oral and written;

-Fluency in a second language, an asset

-Excellent organizational skills;

-Ability to multi-task, with ability to prioritize under pressure;

-Attention to detail;

-Completion of an immigration program is an asset;

-A demonstrated interest in social justice in as asset;
